I have attended the Adult Metabolic Diseases Clinic (AMDC) at Vancouver General Hospital since 2010. This is the oldest freestanding clinic for patients with errors of inborn metabolism in North America, and my physician is one of only a handful of specialists in the country who work with patients with mitochondrial disease. I come from a very large extended family, so he knows most of my family well, even on a cellular level.
The AMDC provides uses a wrap around or multidisciplinary approach to supporting patients with mitochondrial disease. They have a dietitian, a social worker, a psychologist and a nurse on staff in addition to the physicians. This means that patients only have to make one visit and can access any number of resources.
